How to make Bisibele Bhath

Bisibele Bhath is another most popular breakfast in Karnataka. The popular restaurants where you can try bisibele bath in Bangalore are MTR, Adyar Anand bhavan and few of the old hotels. They are usually served with Raita or Kara bhundi and sometimes Potato Chips.  It will be very tasty to too when it is hot.

Preparation Time & Quantity:

Serves – 5
Preparation time – 1 hr.

Ingredients:

  • Oil
  • Ghee
  • Onion – 2
  • Tomato – 2
  • 1 big cup of mixed vegetables of your choice.(i used carrot, beans,potato, capsicum,green peas)
  • Toor Dal – 1 cup
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Coriander – handful
  • Tamarind – lemon sized
  • Jaggery – 1tblspn
  • Salt to taste

Ingredients to grind:

  • Channa dal – 1 tblspn
  • Urad dal – 1 tblspn
  • Coconut – 1 cup
  • Sambar powder – 1 tblspn
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch
  • Cloves – 2
  • Marati moggu – 1
  • Byadgi Red Chillies – 5 (this gives colour)

Procedure for Bisibele Bath:

Heat around 4 cups of water in a heavy bottomed kadai. When the water starts boiling add toor dal, a tspn of oil, a pinch of turmeric powder and a few curry leaves. Now add onions, tomatoes and the mixture of vegetables and let it cook. When the dal is cooked 3/4th add rice. In between, keep adding enough water to cook. When the rice is completely cooked, add ground paste, salt to taste, half a cup of tamarind extract (according to your taste) and little jaggery. Now let the whole mixture cook until the raw smell of the masala goes. Consistency of bisibele bhath should be semi solid like kichdi. Before turning off add coriander and 2 tblspn of ghee. At last give tadka.

For Tadka:
Heat oil and ghee mixture add mustard, when it starts popping add curry leaves.
Now mouth watering bisibele bath is ready. Serve hot with potato chips, Kara bondhi and not to forget to put Ghee while serving.
